Volunteering in Luang Prabang

Volunteering in Luang Prabang, Laos

When traveling, sometimes it's nice to be a little less self-indulgent and a little more socially conscious. If you want to engage in these types of activities, Laos is a great country in which to do so. Not only are there plenty of ecotourism and responsible travel initiatives in the country, Laos also has a number of volunteer (or voluntourism) opportunities to enrich your Laos vacation.

6 Days Volunteering in Akha Village

Volunteering in Luang Prabang, Laos

If you’re able to dedicate more than a few hours to volunteering in Luang Prabang, consider participating in this voluntourism tour to an Akha village in northern Laos, outside of Luang Prabang.

Organized with the cooperation of Tiger Trail, UNODC, and the Lao government, this program allows volunteers to live and experience the daily life and activities of a small Lao Akha ethnic minority village. You will help the locals and positively impact the community through your participation in traditional cultural activities.

Teach English

Teaching English is a common way for travelers to get involved and volunteer while abroad. While there are many opportunities to teach English abroad, consider how cool it would be to teach English local community members that include novice Buddhist monks.

Global Vision International (GVI) allows you to volunteer in Luang Prabang, immersing yourself in the local culture and enriching the education of novice Buddhist monks and other community members. It’s likely that these incredible people will teach you a thing or two as well, making for a truly rewarding Luang Prabang volunteer experience.

Programs run two to twelve weeks long and offer ample opportunities to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site Luang Prabang and its surrounding area. This experience is certainly a great way to volunteer in Luang Prabang, and a rare opportunity to work closely with novice Buddhist monks.

Work with Children

The two most common ways to volunteer with children in Luang Prabang are by assisting with English instruction in schools and by spending time working in one of the country’s many orphanages. If working with children is something really important to you, consider one of these opportunities to volunteer in Luang Prabang.

GVI’s American branch offers volunteering projects that help children and their teachers practice and enhance their English skills.

Another volunteer-abroad organization, i-to-i, has a project that places volunteers in a Luang Prabang orphanage. Volunteers spend their time engaging with the children through games, sports, activities, art, and even homework. If you have two to twelve weeks to spare and are searching for a Luang Prabang volunteer opportunity, hanging out with children and bringing some light into their lives could be a very rewarding experience.

However, these placements all cost money and may not be right for everyone’s budget or time commitment. Fortunately, there’s another Luang Prabang volunteer option that won’t take much time and won’t cost you anything…at least financially.
