From Courtship to Kinship: Wedding Celebrations of Laos’ Ethnic Groups

Place: Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre, Luang Prabang, Laos (15 Sep 2011 - 30 Jun 2012)

“From Courtship to Kinship: Wedding Celebrations of Laos’ Ethnic Groups” is an excellent exhibition providing a rare insight into the distinct wedding traditions of the Lao people and several of the country’s ethnic minorities.  It features documentary photography of rituals and ceremonies, explanations of the lore and symbolism of wedding customs in Laos, and unusual artefacts, such as the wedding crown of the Kim Di Mun.


Ethnik Fashion Show

Place: Hive Bar, Luang Prabang (1 Jan 2012 - 31 Dec 2012)

Twenty Lao models parade down the catwalk modelling over 95 different outfits with intricate designs including traditional jewelry, headwear, and ceremonial outfits, basketry and baby carriers used by the different ethnicities.


Boun Bang Fai (Rocket Festival)

Place: Luang Prabang (1 May 2012 - 31 May 2012)

A ceremony for calling for the rains is performed in the temple during the morning. In the afternoon, people gather in fields on the outskirts of towns and villages to launch their rockets with much revelry.


Rice and Boat Racing Festival

(31 Aug 2012)

On the Khao Padabdin ceremony day, people visit the local temples to make offerings to their dead ancestors as well as to share in merit-making. This festival includes boat racing on the Nam Khan river and a trade fair in Luang Prabang town.


Christmas and New Year

Place: Luang Prabang (18 Dec 2012 - 7 Jan 2013)

Luang Prabang is a very popular place for people to spend Christmas and New Year. Hotels and Guesthouses are often booked months in advance. Please book early to avoid disappointment.


Pii Mai Lao (Lao New Year)

Place: Luang Prabang (14 Apr 2013 - 16 Apr 2013)

Lao New Year is the biggest and most famous of the festivals in Laos. Luang Prabang gets very busy over this time and hotels are often fully booked, weeks if not months, before this time. Book early to ensure rooms are available.
