Mrs Vandara Amphayphone, Owner

Mrs Vandara is a superb, warm host who shares with her guests a treasure trove of information about Lao culture and her special love of textiles and food. Brought up in the Souan Mon Mulberry Gardens weaving area of Vientiane, she has been interested in weaving and the cultivation of silkworms for as long as she can remember. In the time when the first language of education was French, she attended the capital's Lycee. After marrying her silversmith husband from Luang Prabang, she settled in his family home in this ancient silversmithing quarter, which historically served the Royal Court.

Having developed her weaving skills over the years, Vandara is Director of the Lao Textile Association of the Northern Provinces. She travels across northern Lao working on the protection and promotion of this fascinating art, which is a core expression of Lao culture.

Testament to Vandara's culinary interests, her homemade teas and fruit drinks refresh guests in the summer and warm them in the winter. Mrs. Vandara's other Guesthouses include Vanvisa and Vanvisa 2.

"The books were in the hotel room, but I wouldn't say this was "actively" promoted. I'm a big Stay Another Day fan, by the way, having encountered it in Cambodia the year before. We didn't receive any real orientation. The desk manager kindly gave us a map of town, but didn't really communicate much. To be fair, we took off rather abruptly the next day, but we were far more welcomed at our next hotel."

Traveller Comments:
"The room is of fair size and has character. It is about 10 minutes walk to the main tourist strip. It is surrounded by a small garden but still a bit noisy since it is by a busy street. The complimentary breakfast has fresh fruit, baguette, eggs cooked the way you like it, coffee/tea. Over all a pleasant stay."
Ms. Tader C. - United States on 03/01/2010
"Great and charming place in a lovely setting."
Mr. John K. - Netherlands on 13/02/2009
"We left after one sleepless night. This hotel is located on a very busy street, with motorcycles zooming past all night. The room was just okay, except for a terrible chemical smell that gave us both headaches. We discovered some pellets (mothballs?) under the bathroom sink. Upon investigating Luang Prabang the next day, we discovered that many better deals were to be had, and we found a charming room in a quiet location for just $10 more. I don't recommend this place at all."
Mr. Debora L. on 14/07/2008
"This is a wonderful place to stay.
The staff are friendly and exceedingly helpful.
The accomodation is very clean, attractive, and in a great location.
The rooms are spacious and decorated with authentic decor.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here."
Mr. Tristan F. - Australia on 19/05/2008
"Good, large clean rooms but a bit noisy and not all that near the action"
Mrs. C Sarika F. - Canada on 11/04/2008
"The stay was great, the service perfect!"
Mr. Günter L. - Denmark on 26/03/2008
"Beautiful buildings and large, nicely appointeded rooms. Immaculately clean. Efficient, if slightly unpersonal, service. Breakfast OK but nothing special. You get the same thing- fruit plate and large, omelette-like pancake- every day unless you ask for something else. Other choices: Bread and butter and jam or eggs.
Unfortunately the Guesthouse/Hotel is on a extremely noisy street, Visounniath RD, things don't calm down until way after midnight. Would choose another place to stay next time "
Ms. regina m. - Switzerland on 01/03/2008
"Simple, clean and easy to live in. Not a luxury but you get what you need for a good stay. Limited rooms meaning less people, less crowd. Old place but maintain well."
Mr. Siew Tiong G. - Singapore on 17/02/2008
"The locale is very noisy during the day. There is a lot of road traffic which goes deadly quiet during the nightly curfew."
Mrs. Robyn C. - Australia on 07/01/2008
"The manager was really freindly and helpful with out stay in Luang Prbang. She also did many little estra things that really helped us out. And to top is off she was very pleasant and repectful of us newcomers in Laos."
Mr. Thomas R. J. - United States on 06/05/2007
"We enjoyed the staff tremendously in Luang Prabang. Everyone is so very pleasant and very much wanting to please. Everyone was wonderful. I don't know the name of who I thought was the manager, but he is a married man with a child just a little over one year old, who is incredible. We had made reservations for five nights to make sure we had lodging for our stay in Luang Prabang and thought we would move to another location if we weren't pleased there. After meeting him we absolutely would not change places of lodging. We've already recommended to friends traveling in Vietnam who are coming to Luang Prabang to stay at Villa Lane Xang and we definitely would ourselves if ever in Luang Prabang again.

Would you please send to me the name of the man and his e-mail address who I have described above.

Thank you.

Jim"
Mr. James Vinar, J. - United States on 02/05/2007
"I read somewhere this guesthouse had six huge rooms but we got put in a tiny one - barely enough room to swing a cat. Although quite charming, the $25 per night was way excessive so we left after a couple of days and found a very similar place down the road for half the price. Breakfast very disappointing. Had it been better, we may have stayed."
Mr. Neil D. - Vietnam on 01/03/2007
"No comment submitted"
Ms. Laura C. on 23/02/2007
"As a family of 4 persons we have spent 3 nights in a triple room of the Villa Lane Xang and we really enjoyed our stay there. The house is very charming, within an easy walking distance from the main touristic areas and the room is huge.
Breakfast for all was included in the resonnable price."
Ms. Isabelle B. on 23/02/2007
"Villa Lane Xang is the former residence of French professors, it has a lots of charms and belongs to the Unesco heritage : maintenance for any part of the building must be approved by Unesco services. It may, then, take a long time to complete, even if the Villa needs in a hurry to replace some wood (for instance).

We have been staying there for 5 nights, renting 2 suites and 1 single room :

- very friendly staff (2 people speak good english : if they are not available when checking in, knowledge of Lao or Thai is welcome by the staff)

- nice and clean rooms : suites are large, but single room is a bit tiny and lacks some storage units

- good breakfast (crepes or bread, homemade papaya jam, fruits, Lao coffee, tea, orange juice) included in the price (26 USD for single room and 40 USD for 2 or 3 people in suite)

- quite noisy at night time (old windows), although not near the city centre

- some boat and tuk-tuk drivers recommended by the guesthouse staff did not behave correctly or tried to cheat us... Refusing to pay and contacting the guesthouse manager solved the "misunderstanding" problems : be warned !

Overall, we had a nice pleasant stay in Villa Lane Xang and recommend it warmly."
Mr. Philippe A. on 17/02/2007
"Everything was exactly as we hoped.
Nigel and Dorothy, Australia"
Ms. Dorothy C. - Australia on 21/01/2007
"Cleanliness was fine bar ants int he bathroom. front desk is not always manned, otherwise very good!"
Ms. Galia R. - United Kingdom on 25/12/2006
"A delightful place; characterful building, rooms simply and tastefully done out, very friendly and helpful service. Villa Lane Xang really is excellent value for money."
Mr. Fred E. - United Kingdom on 19/12/2006
"I'm not stay in Villa Lane Xang because when we arrived about 6 pm. ( my flight has been delayed for 4 hours ) nobody in counter reception and we are try to looking for the staff but nobody respone or welcome us. I don't know what happen."
Ms. Wirunpat R. - Thailand on 29/11/2006
"We arrived in November 2006 and had a stay for 6 days. We liked our room. Only that the place is a little noisy.

"Goi" the manager of the guest house was very friendly an helpeld with all our questions. She arranged everything we asked for and we were really pleased by her.

We surely would go there again."
