Mrs Vandara Amphayphone, Owner

Mrs Vandara is a superb, warm host who shares with her guests a treasure trove of information about Lao culture and her special loves of textiles and food. Brought up in the Souan Mon Mulberry Gardens weaving area of Vientiane, she has been interested in weaving and the cultivation of silkworms for as long as she can remember. In the time when the first language of education was French, she attended the capital's Lycee. On marrying her silversmith husband from Luang Prabang, she settled in his family home in this ancient silversmithing quarter which historically served the Royal Court.

Having developed her weaving skills over the years, Vandara is Director of the Lao Textile Association of the Northern Provinces. She travels across northern Lao working on the protection and promotion of this fascinating art, which is a core expression of Lao culture.

Testament to Vandara's culinary interests, her homemade teas and fruit drinks refresh guests in the summer and warm them in the winter. Her other guesthouses include Villa Lane Xang and Vanvisa 2.

"Family home, quiet and prompt to provide small comforts. Nice location at end of town strip. No effort to sell anything."
Mrs. Sue B. - Australia on 16/10/2008
"I didn't see anything in the guesthouse about Stay Another Day initiative though I did elsewhere. It's a brilliant concept, though the info in the leaflet is out of date (e.g. on my last evening - Saturday - I went to the Children's Cultural Centre for ballet performance which should have been happening Thurs and Sat and wasn't."
Ms. Penny W. - United Kingdom on 04/09/2008
"There was a Stay Another Day handbook in the room for guests' reference."
Ms. Rie I. - Japan on 09/04/2008
"They didn't really care at all, always with a smile and nice Sabaidee, but that was it, the only thing they were interested in was mainly if you had paied before checking out!"
Ms. Anna B. - Sweden on 14/03/2008
"Great service. Very impressive. I will book through WHL again"

"This place was expensive and there was an 1130pm curfew however it was a very quaint place with lots of charm located a 15min walk from the centre of town"
Mr. Duncan S. - New Zealand on 04/02/2010
"During our stay in Vanvisa guesthouse we were very disappointed to that limit that we even got out one day before and found another more pleasant accommodation for less money. The most annoying thing was the noise from their neighbour from 5 am till 9 am (chopping wood for fire and chopping vegetables). Also they were closing the house gate at 11 pm so that we had to jump over 2 m high gate every night. The owner (or who ever she is) even said to us that we should stay at the guesthouse at the evening and not to be late!!! The room was full of dust (no cleaning at all!!)that I even got my allergy. There was no reception or any kind of entering hall because we had to pass through they living room, kitchen. I even can not explain...it has nothing to do with the review we read here. Also they did not ask for our passports and we did not have to fill any kind of form as we used to in other guesthouses. By the house were we stayed there was also the Vanvisa guesthouse, a much nicer building. We thought after all that they are doing this kind of bad business because they are collecting money for the opening of this new guesthouse. I would not recommend this guesthouse at all. Just look around the old Luang Prabang city and you will find better deals."
Mrs. Sandra V. - Croatia on 20/01/2010
"good location but very loud from animals outside and people inside"
Mrs. Kerstin S. - Austria on 15/01/2010
"We had a room right off of the kitchen/dining area. It was really loud. The beds were extremely uncomfortable and we had to wait 2 days for our laundry. I would definitely not stay here again. There are so many guesthouses in LP, that you shouldn't settle for one you find on the net. I also found the description of the room to be misleading."
Mr. jason c. - United States on 11/01/2010
"The accommodation is tired and grotty. We were charged US21 for transport from the airport which did not eventuate - and was grossly overexpensive. We were invited to eat at the guesthouse - and charged US$60 (2adults and 3kids) which was totally ludicrous and equal to 4 nights of our eating in decent restaurants in LP. It took a lot of calm discussions to get this charge reduced to the US$21 owing to us. Left a sour taste."
Mrs. Ana M. - Australia on 05/01/2010
"The person in charge has us friendly suggest taking us to waterfalls because she was going
she asked us simply to take our sandwiches
At the end of the holidays, she want to pay more for this travel
we refuse friendly to pay"
Mrs. ELIAZORD N. - France on 06/09/2009
"Good location - about 5-7 mins slow walk to the night market. Breakfast was good and they were helpful with suggestions on where to visit, etc."
Ms. Pearl Ann J. - Malaysia on 18/04/2009
"despite paying in advance for my accommodation i didn't get the room i wanted ( and the check-in lady didn't care to mention the problem until i saw the room and asked about it. i was given the price differece but the lady tried to cheat me on the exchange rate. overall, i don't recommed the place - it's overpriced and has a kind of carefree approach to their customers."
Mr. Jakub M. - Poland on 22/02/2009
"The rooms were never cleaned nor the paper basket in the bathroom emptied. We hope that what we found on the floor was only coffee granules that had been spilled & nothing else."
Ms. Ruth K. - United Kingdom on 15/02/2009
"You were looking at a wall through the window. The room was dark and dusty. We stayed 5 days and they didn't clean once and didn't provide us new towels. We heard much better stories about other guesthouses around for a much better price! We were sorry we booked 5 days already on the internet. We don't recommend this one to anyone!"
Mrs. saskia van g. - Netherlands on 12/10/2008
"I would stay there again"
Mr. Carolea D. - Australia on 18/09/2008
"This is a delightful little guesthouse, like being in a Lao household and very convenient, very near river and city centre. Hot water was erratic but may have been partly due to me not understanding system. Would definitely stay there again."
Ms. Penny W. - United Kingdom on 04/09/2008
"I appreciated the hospitality."
Ms. Audra P. - United States on 25/05/2008
"Auntie Vandara can speak very good english and hence she can answer all our questions. the Atmosphere is great and the toys outside our room are fun! the resting area outside our room is fun and cosy too, we had great time there! Location is slightly out of the busy luang prabang center (5mins), however we enjoy the short walk.
"
Ms. Loh Sheue J. - Malaysia on 03/05/2008
"Really nice place! The family who owns the place is so so nice, and always greeted us with a huge smile.
It's a great location, and clean as well!"
Ms. Shulamit P. on 19/04/2008
"The owner lady and her family look very kind. It was a shame that we did not have much communication with each other."
Ms. Rie I. - Japan on 09/04/2008
"I Have stay 3 nights at guesthouse Vanvisa during my stay. Room was never bi cline op never refreshes towels thank you never again I will stay in this guesthouse dirty everywhere I not bi shore bed had been changed."
Mr. Taelemans Alfons P. - Belgium on 16/03/2008
"Vanvisa is an ok guesthouse, but not what I expected from what I payed for a room (it's expensive compared to other better guesthouses in Luang Prabang). The room had termites crawling all over the walls and the floor which of course wasn't that nice. The location is okay - close to downtown, but again, other cheaper, better guesthouses are even closer.

The staff always had a smile to share and it was a friendly and nice atmosphere, two toilets with showers in to share between atleast nine beds made me waiting a couple of times.

If you don't mind termites all over the rooms this is an okay but expensive place to stay."
Ms. Anna B. - Sweden on 14/03/2008
"We arrived at Vanvisa at 10:30pm after a long day of travelling - I had booked and paid for our room in advance. When we got there, we were informed that it was "full - no room for you." She even suggested that we sleep on a messy bed that was OUTSIDE and that we get no discount for that inconvenience. After we declined the outside bed and asked if she knew any other places to stay, she said the only place that wasn't full was one that was nearly 3 times what we were hoping to pay (and we found out later that there were other - cheaper - rooms nearby). She handed us our cash back (shortchanged us, too) and sent us out the door. Not happy at all."
Ms. Mandy M. on 08/03/2008
"A unique spot. Very nice and quiet although beds were rather hard."
Ms. Daphne S. - Hong Kong on 18/02/2008
"The guest house family were all very pleasant and accomodating but the actual accomodation itself was very, very basic. Of course you get what you pay for. We found the rooms to be very small and dark. The beds were like sleeping on concrete. The power point in one room didn't work and it was difficult to read in the available light. No drinking glasses were supplied but did arrive promptly when we asked for them. Our beds were not "made up" during our stay. We chose to ask them to do a small bag of washing but on checkout they charged us three times the amount applicable. Our washing was left on the line to get damp and we had to bring it in ourselves the following day. Just little things, but we noticed a big difference at the next guest house (Ratana) when we moved there for only a few extra dollars per night."
Ms. Michelle M. - Australia on 14/02/2008
"The guest house is pretty nice, very clean, but the beds really were hard as a rock! The only problem occured when we checked out... we had stayed an extra night that we did not book through this site and paid 4$ less. After we left, the man came after us and demanded that we pay the extra four dollars, even though we had already paid and checked out of the hotel. It was strange and left us feeling quite bad about the hote. Other than that, it was a nice place."
Ms. Lynn R. - United States on 24/01/2008
"Lovely, traditional house. Worth a visit for an authentic Lao experience. "
Mr. Dominic B. - United Kingdom on 21/01/2008
"The Vanvisa is a wonderful experience. Situated at the back of and above an antique textile shop, and run by a charming, gentille and cultured family, it is a real Luang Prabang gem. I have had no hesitation in recommending it to friends, and will certainly stay there again if I return to Laos. The rooms and en-suite facilities are kept very clean, laundry is cheap, and is delivered back quickly, and towels sand sheets are changed every few days.

Any complaints? Well not as such, but as with all far eastern cultures, bullet hard pillows are the norm. That is the way they like them. I scorned my boyfriends idea of taking up valuable rucksack room with his own pillow bought from home, but soon saw the sense in it, not only for sleeping in our accommodation, but also for bus and boat journeys.

One other thing. There was nowhere except four coathooks on the wall to hang or store clothes, which after many days in a rucksack really could do with hanging up. They had to be kept in piles on the floor, which wasn't ideal.

The best thing about the Vanvisa was the wonderful huge comfortable bed in our room. After walking all day, it was a delight to collapse into at night. The bedding was fresh and lovely.

The Vanvisa is a delightful guest house, run by fabulous people. We will certainly be back if we visit Luang Prabang again.

Ms. Josie K. - United Kingdom on 16/01/2008
"We booked for 5 nights but unfortunately we moved out of the guesthouse after the first night. We were a group of eight - two families that were put up in the rooms found at the front of the house. we found the rooms extremely small and the beds so hard that no-one sleep very well. I am sure that the newer rooms at the back are better. We paid $12 for a room into which you could be seen while showering by people eating above. The place looked like it needed a good clean up. The guesthouse that we moved too was 100% better for a few dollars more. The owner however was Ok about us moving out and handled our concerns professionly."
Mrs. Anna M. - Australia on 29/12/2007
"The staff was always quite friendly and checking in/out was very easy. When I made the booking I was a little nervous that the place did not have air con. However, it was a pleasant surprise to wake up the first night from being too cold! Although it was August, the lowest fan setting was more than cool enough for the well-built place.

I had a room downstairs, and on the first night I was woken by the guests above, but most of the time the 11:30 business/bar closings mean that everyone gets in about the same time, so the thin ceilings weren't a bother after that first night. Location is quite a bit a way from the rest of the guest houses but the whole city is very walkable, so that's not a problem. Overall, pretty good place."
Ms. Jayna R. - United States on 04/08/2007
"We had a lovely time at the guest house. We were made to feel very welcome. Rooms were clean and the atmosphere very nice."
Ms. Laura T. - United Kingdom on 10/04/2007
"I think it's too expensive for what it offers. Too small and dark rooms for 12 dollars."
Mrs. Isabel D. on 04/04/2007
"No comment submitted"
Mr. Thomas L. - Sweden on 25/02/2007
"The guesthouse offers a very warm & homely environment. The rooms are very clean. Definitely value for money."
