Noi, Our Cook
Nam Khan Villas was an idea our family had after traveling three years ago through South East Asia. We could see then there was not so many places for families or travelers to relax in a natural environment close to towns and still have all the comforts to enjoy a holiday. [Read more]Environment. Culture. Society.
Although only a recently opened resort, Nam Khan Villas have already started working with the local community.
Environment
All bungalows are equipped with organic toilets and guests are asked to consider the use of their energy during their stay. Graham and Carolyn (co-owners) have plans to get the place fully functioning on hyrdo-electric power from the river in the near future.
Culture
All the bungalows at Nam Khan Villas Resort have been relocated and painstakingly transported piece-by-piece up the river before being reconstructed in their current location. The result is a near traditional Laos village set-up.
With the increase in popularity of concrete buildings in villages around Luang Prabang, traditional homes like these made out of 100+ year old timbers are becoming rarer and rarer. Nam Khan Villas Resort are trying to preserve a traditional part of Lao Heritage by saving these buildings from the onset of development.
From the Nam Khan Villas youcan also wander up a small path behind the property to a small village to see and purchase traditional weaving.
Society
Their vegetables and herbs for the restaurant are all home-grown along the banks of the Nam Khan River. Locally employed gardeners receive training in growing exotic varities as well as the traditional produce. This produce is subsequently used in the Mediterranean / Asian fushion restaurant. All other food is sourced from the local markets (except the meat).
Nam Khan Villas sponsors their local village in the annual boat racing festival. If you are in Luang Prabang in September then come down and join in the fun as the village team (including father and son from the resort) train for their big event.
Carolyn and Graham also support the Stay Another Day initiative and local orphanages.
