Living as a Mahout

Caring for destination
Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
Environment and Society.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
Live as a Mahout (elephant keeper) and you will have the experience of a lifetime communing with nature and learning about these protected beauties. You will visit the Elephant Park Project which protects former working elephants by giving them a new home free from abusive and poor conditions. These elephants have been rescued from circuses and illegal traders and by comparison are now in retirement! The Tiger Trail Elephant Park herd has a new member - a baby elephant that was freed from being sold to Thailand.
This tour is operated by Tiger Trail Outdoor Adventures. Tiger Trail is part of the Fair Trek community based tourism project and thereby follows the guidelines of eco-tourism as defined by international organisations and the national government. This co-operative effort in conjunction with Lao people places local employment and alternative livelihoods as a high priority. A portion of Tiger Trail's earnings is invested directly into communities in their tour area. Tiger Trail has developed a reputation for providing employment locally, investing in training its staff, using local products and caring for the local wildlife.
