Ban Lao Hotel
Sustainability
Mr Anolong, an architect, designed the transformation of his family's home in the late 1990s. Having already operated as a Guest House for several years, with the new 2 storey garden wing the property became a 25 room hotel, the classical reception building retaining its original spaciousness. When the house was built in the mid-20th century the space was certainly required - his mother, Von, was one of 10 children and her father had to be sure there was a room for each of them. As they grew up the family moved its focus to Vientiane and spent the holidays in this relaxing northern haven. Despite having lived in the United States for 20 years, she still carries with her a photograph of the lake in the garden where the children would row in wooden boats. The lake is an integral focus of the lush garden, with one of the old boats at the restaurant entrance. Von, forever a gracious Luang Prabang native, is a superb host and traditional chef, as well as an energetic function organizer.
